Lesson Introduction

Crypto emerged as a response to weaknesses exposed in the global financial system. What began as a technical experiment in decentralised money has evolved into a broad ecosystem of digital assets, platforms, and financial activity that now intersects with payments, investment, regulation, and monetary policy.

Crypto introduces new ways to transfer value, store wealth, and automate financial relationships, but it also raises significant concerns around consumer protection, financial stability, taxation, and crime. These tensions have placed crypto at the centre of ongoing debates between innovators, regulators, central banks, and governments.

In this module, we examine crypto from a practical and economic perspective. We explore the core ideas behind decentralised money, the technology that underpins crypto assets, the main use cases that have driven adoption, and the risks that concern regulators and policymakers. We also examine how South Africa and other jurisdictions are responding through regulation, coordination, and hybrid models that seek to balance innovation with stability.

This module is designed for professionals who need a clear understanding of crypto, its risks, and its place within the modern financial system.
