Lesson Introduction
Whistleblowing plays a critical role in exposing misconduct, fraud, corruption, and abuse within organisations. In many cases, whistleblowers are the first to identify risks that formal controls, audits, and reporting systems fail to detect.
When whistleblowing systems are weak, individuals who speak up may face retaliation, isolation, or dismissal, and misconduct can continue unchecked. When systems function properly, whistleblowing becomes a powerful governance tool that strengthens accountability, protects organisations, and supports ethical culture.
In this module, we examine whistleblowing from a practical and legal perspective. Using real‑world cases from South Africa and abroad, we explore what whistleblowing is, why protection matters, how organisations should design effective reporting frameworks, and what happens when those frameworks fail. We also consider the role of technology and AI in supporting whistleblower protection and detection.
This module is designed for professionals who need a clear understanding of whistleblowing obligations, protections, and best practices within organisational and regulatory environments.
